Why So Many Atlanta Garages End Up With Chips

Decorative chip flooring is the finish we install most often in Atlanta garages, and the reason is practical. Red-brown grit off driveways, pollen in spring, leaves in fall and wet tires most of the year all show up fast on a glossy solid color. A flake epoxy floor breaks up the surface with hundreds of small vinyl chips in two or three tones, so ordinary dust and tire marks blend in between cleanings. The chips also add a slight texture, so footing is surer on a wet floor, and a thick, chip-filled layer stands up to dropped tools better than a thin coat.

Building a chip floor, layer by layer

Like every floor we install, it begins with diamond grinding, crack filling and moisture testing. Next comes a pigmented base coat, usually epoxy, rolled out in sections. While that base is still wet, we throw vinyl flake across it by hand. In a full broadcast we keep throwing until the base will not hold any more, a step installers call broadcasting to refusal. Once the base has hardened, excess flake gets scraped loose and vacuumed away, the surface is knocked down to take off sharp edges, and a clear topcoat seals it. In most garages that topcoat is polyaspartic, because it resists UV and abrasion better than epoxy.

Heavy chip coverage or a lighter scatter?

With heavy coverage, chips bury the base color completely. It is the most durable and the most forgiving to keep clean. A partial broadcast scatters chips more lightly leaving the base color visible in the gaps. It looks more speckled and uses fewer chips, but it gives up some texture and impact resistance. HomeAdvisor lists flakes at about $0.04 per square foot, which means the chips are seldom the big cost. Labor, grinding time and how many layers go down are. For garages that see real use, we usually recommend full broadcast.

Choosing a blend for an Atlanta home

Mid-tone blends of gray, tan and brown hide dirt most effectively. Very light blends brighten a dark garage but show clay and tire marks sooner. Very dark blends look rich but can show dust and get warmer in a sunny garage. Our sample boards come along on the visit, and we hold them on your actual slab next to the door and under the ceiling fixture. North Georgia sun is hazy in summer and low and gold in fall, and colors read differently at noon than they do in the evening with the overhead light on.

Texture and grip

The finished feel of a flake epoxy floor depends on how thick the topcoat is. A thinner topcoat leaves more chip texture showing, which means better grip and slightly harder cleaning. A heavier topcoat fills between the chips for a smoother surface that mops easily but is slicker when wet. For garages, mudrooms and pool equipment areas we lean toward more texture. For a basement rec room or a display-style hobby garage, a smoother finish may suit you better. A gritty additive in the final layer can give you some of both.

Where chip floors fit beyond the garage

Chip systems work in basements, laundry rooms, workshops, locker rooms, break rooms and small commercial spaces. In businesses they are popular because they look finished, hide wear and can be repaired in sections. Golf cart garages and boat storage bays are another good fit, since the broadcast helps take impact from trailer jacks and dropped gear.

Chip floors for carts, boats and lake gear

Golf carts are part of daily life in parts of the metro. Peachtree City has more than 100 miles of cart paths, and more than 10,000 households there own a cart. Up north, Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona put bass boats, pontoon trailers, coolers and life jackets into a lot of garages. Those floors get wet gear, sandy tires, dripping hulls and heavy trailer jacks. A full chip broadcast with a textured topcoat handles that use well. Spilled water and lake mud wipe up, footing stays decent when the floor is wet, and a dropped anchor is less likely to leave a visible mark than on a smooth solid color.

How long chips last and how to keep them looking good

A chip floor on properly ground concrete is a long-term floor. HomeGuide puts solid epoxy systems at 10 to 20 years, while thin water-based coatings tend to last 3 to 5 years. Care is simple: dust mop or blow it off, rinse or damp mop with a mild cleaner, and avoid harsh acids. Put a pad under kickstands and trailer jacks if they sit in one spot for months, and wipe up fuel or brake fluid rather than letting it sit.

Chip Floor Choices

These are the decisions that shape how your chip floor looks, feels and wears.

Full broadcast to refusal

Chips cover the base completely. The most durable option, strongest at hiding dirt, and our usual garage choice.

Partial broadcast

Chips spread more sparsely across a colored base, for an open, speckled look.

Chip size and blend

Smaller or larger flakes in two- and three-color blends, picked by holding boards on your slab under your fixtures.

Polyaspartic clear topcoat

A UV-stable, abrasion-resistant seal over the chips, used on any floor that sees daylight.

Texture level

Topcoat thickness adjusted for more grip or easier mopping, with grit additive on request.

Cove base and stem walls

Chips carried a few inches up the wall or stem wall for a finished edge that is easier to clean.

How We Install a Chip Floor

1. Samples and testing

We bring chip blends, test the slab for moisture, and measure the space.

2. Grind and repair

The floor is ground, vacuumed and patched so the base bonds to sound concrete.

3. Base and broadcast

A pigmented base is rolled in sections, and chips are tossed into each section before it sets.

4. Scrape and vacuum

Once cured, loose chips are removed and the surface is knocked down smooth.

5. Clear topcoat

A polyaspartic or epoxy topcoat seals the chips, applied after a dew point check.

Decorative Chip Flooring Questions

What is the difference between chip, flake and vinyl flake floors?

They are the same thing. Vinyl flakes, or chips, are broadcast into a wet resin base and sealed with a clear topcoat. Different installers use different names.

Are chip floors hard to clean?

Not usually. A dust mop and an occasional damp mop handle most dirt. More texture means a little more effort, so we can make the topcoat smoother if easy cleaning matters most to you.

Will the chips fade in the sun?

The chips are fairly stable, but an epoxy topcoat can yellow in UV. We use a polyaspartic topcoat wherever daylight reaches the floor.

Can a chip floor be repaired?

Yes. A damaged spot can be ground out, re-broadcast with the same blend and re-coated. Matching is easier with busy multi-color blends.
